Where are they now?
Craig Mather 1989-2002
I was first introduced to the club whilst still at primary school
(aged 10 - 1989 or thereabouts). I still remember the hellish training
sessions then, Bobby, Davy (Henderson and McCallum) and George MacLeod,
but nothing could prepare me for what was to come. Many gala's later,
Jimmy decided it was time I did some 'real work'. That never really
materialised, so instead many years later I succumbed to coaching.
Coaching a Uni’ teams and teaching young kids were easy in
comparison (in hindsight - maybe there is a bit in common), but
trying to make you bunch of reprobates (Jimmy's quote not mine)
enthusiastic enough to turn up never mind work. Then came the hard
set. With much disbelief, you all responded to the scrawny character
(some more than most!), with only a little backchat - "you
couldn't do these sets - so why should we?" I heard only once
or twice. In fairness a really enjoyable and rewarding experience.
So I moved away from Glasgow 2 years ago (away form the mother cooking)
to the dark side - Edinburgh - and am still there. Now a fully fledged
Dentist I am working in the Edinburgh Dental Institute (sounds posh,
but not really), fixing and removing people’s teeth. Swimming
hasn't been so much a part of life just now, but when I move back
will have to get into shape.
Best memory - watching a very drunk Norrie convince my mother on
the phone that he was very responsible and would look after her
15 year old son whilst we all went out on the Razz, stating that
he would ensure I didn't get drunk (oops) as we ended up in Rhapsody's.
And so it began..."
