Where are they now?
Martin Lynch
Hi folks, my name is Martin Lynch, known to most people in the
swimming
world as 'Marsh'. Iain mentioned that Jimmy wanted an edition of
your
magazine printed for Nomads, 30th, birthday and was looking for
contributions from dudes from all walks as it where on what Nomads
meant to
them. The name conjures up all sorts of nostalgia for me; I had
joined
Glasgow Masters (now defunct) and was looking for some extra training
time, I can't remember why, more likely looking for an excuse to
go drinking
in Byres Road. It felt like moving home, having given up 'real'
swimming a
few years earlier I had lost track of many friends I met through
swimming for
Cumbernauld and at Glasgow University. Nomads having started out
as CES, had at least half a dozen people I had swum with and against
for many years. The club always seemed like a family to me more
than a club, a central hard core of warm hearted souls, who adopt
anyone who has any attachment to swimming at all, as if they had
known them all along. Parties, binge drinking,
sleeping on floors, breakfast at Jonnie's flat, swimming with dreadful
hangovers, Jimmy's sarcasm, Norrie's infectious hysterical laughter,
Nomads
has a very good sense of humour and of fun running through it. I
have moved
down under and have joined Wollongong (about 50 miles south of Sydney)
Masters recently, at 40 I seem to be one of the youngest, and it
all seems
very tame in comparison to you guys. Hope you are all still together
for
many years to come and hope to see you soon –
Marsh.
