Where are they now?
Joanna Breare
What do I remember at Nomads? Well I thought they were a very friendly
bunch (despite me being English - something I was very sensitive
about despite being a Mackintosh by roots!). I remember swimming
the postal one hour swim with Alli and Alieda and doing extremely
well. I also remember swimming the best I have ever achieved in
my life - which I put down to the great and rigorous coaching of
Jimmy.
I had to leave the Nomads as I was posted to Vietnam where I trained
on my own. I have never competed since leaving Nomads, although
have kept up my swimming to a certain extent.
Here in New Zealand I am a member of the New Plymouth Seals (a Master
Club). I have not swum (trained) for 18 months due to a shoulder
injury which I endured after a 4km open water race in the harbour!
I hope to get back training soon and hope to see you all at a world
Masters event sometime in the future. If however you ever wish to
come and compete in New Zealand - you are more than welcome to come
and stay.
The big events since I left Nomads are that I got married in 1997
to a Kiwi (Pete) who loves rugby, especially when the English get
beaten (but then that's lots of people who have the same feeling!).
We have two children (Nicola is nearly 5 and Charlotte is nearly
2½ years old). Neither children can swim, but I am working
on it.
Last year Pete and I (with the help of a builder) built our new
house. We live on a farmlet (14 acres) and are in the process of
buying stock and a dog or two.
I can't think of anything else to write. If I find a decent photo
of myself I will send it - but I look pretty much as I did before
except a little older. At least I can still get into clothes that
I bought in Glasgow!!!!
Love Joanna
