Where are they now?
John Bradley and Maggie Hood
John and Maggie got together in 1999 whilst at Glasgow and after a few
months of blissful coupledom they left to go out into the big, bad world.
However John headed south to Preston as Lecturer in Exercise Physiology
at the University of Central Lancashire and Maggie headed north to Montrose
as Analytical Chemist with Glaxo. This surprisingly produced a minor
logistical problem of a 350-mile commute each weekend although the train
journey and accompanying view from Dundee to Montrose was very scenic.
During Maggie’s time in Montrose she managed to resist the temptation
of using the open air 50m pool at Stonehaven for training purposes, instead
dabbling at circuit training, squash and badminton. Maggie stayed in
Montrose for 4 years until she moved back to home soil, Northern Ireland.
This lasted only 18 months when a new position came up as Section Head
with Quintiles, a pharmaceutical company in Edinburgh. Maggie now works
with Quintiles at Heriot Watt University and lives in Falkirk.
Whilst in Preston John tried a bit of circuit training, running, an aborted
Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride (foot and mouth put a stop to
that) before joining a local Active Virgin for exercise. The Virgin Active
Gym in Preston had a 25m pool and a group of mainly triathletes but also
included some real swimmers to swim with twice a week. After 5 years
and 4 months as Exercise Physiology Lecturer he gave his notice in, packed
his bags and up and left, passing Dick Whittington on the way and headed
north to Falkirk. He has recently become Exercise Physiologist to the
Scottish Institute of Sport, based between the West of Scotland Institute
of Sport in the Palace of Art, Bellahouston Park in Glasgow and the Institute
hub in Stirling.
During the 5-and-a-bit years since leaving Glasgow like a bad penny John
kept turning up for various swimming competitions as bag carrier for
Nomads. Maggie occasionally turned up, as a shining good penny and told
John off for something. Now both in the same place the chances of turning
up for training are improving. Possibly both at the same pool at the same time.
